    Hello Multiple MOMs,

It's that time of year again for back to school. And with that brings the question for multiple parents, "Do I keep them together or separate them." Don’t let anyone pressure you to do one or the other, it’s a family decision. And what’s best for your children.

Did you know there's a "Parent's Choice" law to protect you? This is the Texas law: https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/education-code/educ-sect-25-043.html

It is YOUR right MOMs if you want your children together or separated. Make sure you follow the guidelines, so you’re not surprised by a loop hole. For example, some states will impose a “14-day by letter” rule to keep your multiples together, otherwise they will automatically be separated.

The way to go about this is to contact the attendance office as soon as you register your multiples. If you receive any push back, go up the chain of command (I'm an old Army reservist and retired Army wife so the term is a habit! LOL). If attendance office isn’t cooperating, then Counselor, then Principle, then the District. I, personally, have never had to go that far up the chain. I usually get my answer at the attendance or counselor level. YOU are your children’s advocate. Advocate what you know is best for THEM. Don’t let anyone discourage you.

Kathy Dolan, a twin MOM from New York began a lobbying crusade to Congress, and all 50 states about 15-20 years ago to get this law passed. Minnesota was the first state to sign twin’s law into being in 2005. She began this crusade because she wanted her twins kept together in the same class, but her school said no. But if she brought a doctor’s note, they would keep them together. She has fought legislation to make this law, use it if you need to.

Currently 14 states have twin/multiples laws set, and 11 states are in legislation for twin laws. We need to get the word out to help legislation continue in the rest of the United States. This site has information on which states currently have twin laws: https://www.verywellfamily.com/twins-in-school-p2-2447495

Most schools have a mandatory separation rule for multiples. This will be done, unless YOU use your parental and state right, if you want your multiple's together to make it happen.

Of course, some multiples parents want their multiples separated, and that's fine too. That's your family's choice. Personally, we made the decision that when our identical (because sometimes that makes a difference in separation) twin girls went to school, they would be kept together until THEY asked for different classes. Our personal journey was a little different in that we are retired military. Some places we moved were so small they only had one class. Some were so big they were divided into teams.

    Our Twin’s School history:

    • PK thru 2nd grade - together
    • 3rd grade - they asked to be separate (That year did not go well.)
    • 4th & 5th grade - one class, small school
    • 6th - same team, same core classes (Math, Science, English, History), different electives
    • 7th - 12th - same as 6th

I also read a book National Mothers of Twins Club/Multiples of America (NOMOTC/MOA) promotes about separating multiples. There was a story I'll never forget in the book about ID twin girls who were skipping school in high school. When they were caught hiding in the bathroom and asked why, they said, "We wanted to be together." Because everyone separated them in everything, they we're never together. I swore that would not happen to my girls.

I feel that whatever decision you make when enrolling your multiples in Kindergarten will not hurt them later. You can always change your decision every year. We’ve made changes mid-year. Just be open and watch for signs there is a problem, investigate, and make the changes needed. You got this!

P.S. This goes for sports as well, not the law part. Just to separated or not in sports. Our girls refuse to be separated when they play sports. They play everything together: Soccer, Tennis, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Basketball.

There is also a petition you can sign to make "Parent's Choice" a national law: https://www.change.org/p/parents-of-twins-twin-law-in-every-state-in-usa

This is an article for keeping twins or multiples together: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/intense-emotions-and-strong-feelings/201403/twins-in-defense-togetherness

    * This blog was first published by PAMOM member Britt Westdyke on her blog, The Travel Tribe.

Just recently, I spent numerous hours researching resorts within driving distance to take our boys to for the weekend. Our three year old has been requesting to go on vacation and I wanted to find the perfect resort that had something for everyone in the family. I am so happy I stumbled upon The Lakeway Resort and Spa on Lake Travis. We had the best weekend and our three year old is already asking to go back!

The Lakeway Resort and Spa on Lake Travis is the perfect location for a weekend trip or your summer vacation. Located on Lake Travis, it is just a short drive from Austin, Texas. The resort does a great job catering to both adults and kids. I recommend getting a room that overlooks Lake Travis if possible. The views are spectacular. The hotel has its own marina so you will be able to see many beautiful boats coming in and out from your balcony.

Check-in time is 4pm but if you arrive early, they will allow full access to the resort and hold your bags at the front desk. The resort has plenty to do so if you arrive early do not hesitate to head inside. Upon check-in, you receive mini bottles of wine. Major win in my book!

The hotel features a couple onsite bars, including a poolside bar. There is also a full service restaurant that has great views of the pools. If you do not feel like leaving your room, their room service is top notch. If you are on a budget and traveling with kids, the kid’s portions are more than enough. We ordered multiple kid meals for breakfast and ended up having extra food.

We picked this resort because of all the things they offer for the kids. The pool features a splash pad area and a small slide for the toddlers as well as a larger slide for the older kids/adults. The pool is zero entry so the smaller kids can easily get into and out of the pool. Right next to the splash pad area are numerous cabanas that are fully covered. These are a first come first serve basis and are great if you are bringing small children. You can easily get out of the sun and eat lunch or watch the children play while you relax with a cocktail.

The one thing that makes this resort different from other resorts is the Kid’s Zone. If your children are over 5 years old, you can drop them off for up to 2 hours so you can get some adult only time. This service is included if you are guests at the hotel and is open 7 days a week. If you have children that are under 5 years old, do not worry, you still get access to the Kid’s Zone but an adult has to stay.  The Kid’s Zone features ping pong table, Foosball, numerous bounce houses, slides, mini golf, and a baby/toddler area with age appropriate toys.

For the adults, there is an onsite spa as well as an adult only pool with a swim up bar. The adult only pool is a three-tier infinity pool overlooking Lake Travis. It is easily one of the prettiest pools I’ve ever seen.

The resort is located on a marina so we ended up renting a ski boat for a few hours to cruise around the lake. The boys loved getting to see all the other boats up close and all of the beautiful properties lining the lake. We highly recommend doing this because the lake is so pretty!

If you are dining away from the resort, check out The Oasis. It is located on a cliff overlooking Lake Travis and the restaurant is phenomenal. Make sure to have reservations because it is extremely popular. You will not be disappointed.

Tip – Since this resort is a four star, it is on the expensive side. I found that Priceline occasionally has it in express deals. Express deals give you a cheaper rate but you don’t know which hotel you are getting. Priceline express deals do guarantee location and the number of stars. Make sure to check for four star hotels on Lake Travis if booking through their site. Since there aren’t many four stars on Lake Travis, you are almost guaranteed this is the hotel. I used the express deal for our weekend away and ended up getting 16% off. Also, the resort has a Facebook page that occasionally runs specials so be sure to check that out prior to your stay.

We hope you enjoy your time here as much as we did. We will definitely be making this a yearly tradition from now on.

    Happy traveling!
