    * This blog was first published by PAMOM member Britt Westdyke on her blog, The Travel Tribe.

Just recently, I spent numerous hours researching resorts within driving distance to take our boys to for the weekend. Our three year old has been requesting to go on vacation and I wanted to find the perfect resort that had something for everyone in the family. I am so happy I stumbled upon The Lakeway Resort and Spa on Lake Travis. We had the best weekend and our three year old is already asking to go back!

The Lakeway Resort and Spa on Lake Travis is the perfect location for a weekend trip or your summer vacation. Located on Lake Travis, it is just a short drive from Austin, Texas. The resort does a great job catering to both adults and kids. I recommend getting a room that overlooks Lake Travis if possible. The views are spectacular. The hotel has its own marina so you will be able to see many beautiful boats coming in and out from your balcony.

Check-in time is 4pm but if you arrive early, they will allow full access to the resort and hold your bags at the front desk. The resort has plenty to do so if you arrive early do not hesitate to head inside. Upon check-in, you receive mini bottles of wine. Major win in my book!

The hotel features a couple onsite bars, including a poolside bar. There is also a full service restaurant that has great views of the pools. If you do not feel like leaving your room, their room service is top notch. If you are on a budget and traveling with kids, the kid’s portions are more than enough. We ordered multiple kid meals for breakfast and ended up having extra food.

We picked this resort because of all the things they offer for the kids. The pool features a splash pad area and a small slide for the toddlers as well as a larger slide for the older kids/adults. The pool is zero entry so the smaller kids can easily get into and out of the pool. Right next to the splash pad area are numerous cabanas that are fully covered. These are a first come first serve basis and are great if you are bringing small children. You can easily get out of the sun and eat lunch or watch the children play while you relax with a cocktail.

The one thing that makes this resort different from other resorts is the Kid’s Zone. If your children are over 5 years old, you can drop them off for up to 2 hours so you can get some adult only time. This service is included if you are guests at the hotel and is open 7 days a week. If you have children that are under 5 years old, do not worry, you still get access to the Kid’s Zone but an adult has to stay.  The Kid’s Zone features ping pong table, Foosball, numerous bounce houses, slides, mini golf, and a baby/toddler area with age appropriate toys.

For the adults, there is an onsite spa as well as an adult only pool with a swim up bar. The adult only pool is a three-tier infinity pool overlooking Lake Travis. It is easily one of the prettiest pools I’ve ever seen.

The resort is located on a marina so we ended up renting a ski boat for a few hours to cruise around the lake. The boys loved getting to see all the other boats up close and all of the beautiful properties lining the lake. We highly recommend doing this because the lake is so pretty!

If you are dining away from the resort, check out The Oasis. It is located on a cliff overlooking Lake Travis and the restaurant is phenomenal. Make sure to have reservations because it is extremely popular. You will not be disappointed.

Tip – Since this resort is a four star, it is on the expensive side. I found that Priceline occasionally has it in express deals. Express deals give you a cheaper rate but you don’t know which hotel you are getting. Priceline express deals do guarantee location and the number of stars. Make sure to check for four star hotels on Lake Travis if booking through their site. Since there aren’t many four stars on Lake Travis, you are almost guaranteed this is the hotel. I used the express deal for our weekend away and ended up getting 16% off. Also, the resort has a Facebook page that occasionally runs specials so be sure to check that out prior to your stay.

We hope you enjoy your time here as much as we did. We will definitely be making this a yearly tradition from now on.

    Happy traveling!

PAMOM member Erin Frampton was invited to preview the new Crayola Experience just before its grand opening at the Willow Bend Mall in Plano. Crayola covered the cost of her admission in exchange for an honest review. Here’s what she and her 3-year-old twin boys thought about the new attraction.

    What is the Crayola Experience?

This is one amazing place to explore, and you will find many hands-on activities, machines, and play areas for various ages. The boys loved putting their token (.50) in to watch the crayons being made with personalized wrappers and retrieve colored Model Magic. There are many added computer screens for the kids to touch and explore, and most of the instructions were very user friendly. A few of these areas are definitely designed for children in the 6 years old and up age range.

There are two playground structures in the middle of the building complete with tunnels and slides.  On a busy day this would make little nervous to let my little one run off into this infrastructure with lots of older, screaming kids, but they do have one for children under 3 as well but much smaller in size. There is some many great adventures here even some that I enjoyed as mom.

They have a show that is included with your admission. It goes through how crayons are made. This was something that they boys really enjoyed. They also have addition crafts that you can do as well for an addition fee depending on what they are offering that day.

Parents Night Out! – Crayola Experience will also be offering what they Call Crayola After Dark. This will be offered to adults only (no kiddos). There will be wine tastings, adult crafts and more. Can’t Wait!

What Age Group is the Crayola Experience For?

Somewhere along the way, I stopped and asked a grandmother that was there with their granddaughter how old she was? She was having so much fun with some of the animation things that really required you to stay in the lines while coloring. She was almost 7 and was really having a great time. I would say that it really depends on the child- some kids love art and can remain pretty focused when it comes to coloring and exploring with different mediums.  There is a small toddler area for little ones to play with light pegs, ball, and chalk. There were many things that were great for the 6 and up I would say and a few less things for my twins that are 3. While they had a blast and we will definitely come back again but the other kids definitely get to interact with a few more things unless your little ones will sit with you while you color some of the things for them (mine will not, have to be super independent).

But are the play areas alone worth the entry fee for toddlers? You’d have to decide based on what your child likes. If I knew my little one didn’t like to sit and “create” just yet, I might try waiting another year or two before making the trip. Although children 3 and under are Free! Also, and I will be totally honest here, this is a busy place and lots of kids visit. So it can be kind of germy. Just bring your hand sanitizer or have your kids wash hands frequently between stations if you’re worried about that kind of thing (hey, some of us are germaphobes, don’t judge!)

    The Crayola Store

I hate to admit it, but my favorite part of the visit was The Crayola Store. There was so much to look at and buy, so many cute things that I wanted to take home, I had to control myself.  I also vowed to return for Christmas gifts this year, since the store is accessible without having to pay for admission to the Experience.

    Restaurants and Food

The Crayola Café features sandwiches, salads, pizza, hot dogs and pretzels and more. We had pizza that day it was good but nothing special. They do not allow outside food at this location. They do have family meal deals as well as individual things as well. If you wanted to save money on food you could bring your own lunch and eat it outside of the attraction or go to the food court just make sure to get your hand stamped so that you can go back in.

    Single Day Admission – $20.99
    Year Season Pass – $30.99
    Family 4 Pack – $104
Children 3 and under – Free
They also offer sleepovers and birthday parties!

You can visit to help plan your trip or to see in more detail what it has in store for you.
